Bubba

Look close, can you see his tail?

Look close, he’s in there!

Bubba came to us from the Rocky Ford - La Junta area in September 2009 after being hit by a car. He was dehydrated, had a big gash on top of his head, a swollen shut left eye, various abrasions all over and a fish hook in his esophagus. Thanks to the expert treatment by Dr. Mugasis at Pets & Friends Animal Hospital, the hook was safely removed and it was determined that the left eye was intact.

Because reptiles heal VERY slowly and because an injured reptile will die if it is allowed to hibernate, Bubba had to be kept awake and eating all winter. Not as easy as it sounds! Besides really, really wanting to hibernate, he had to be removed from his tank daily for cleaning of his wounds, something he really did not appreciate.

Eventually, though, the time came for release. Bubba’s wounds had healed, he could see out of both eyes and he had gained about 5 pounds over the winter, having come in at just under 7 pounds and weighing 12 pounds when he was released at the end of April 2010!
